IGCSE Grade 5 Science Germination of seeds
|
The process by which an organism emerges from a seed or spore is known as germination.
Germination is sprouting of seed.
Imbibition is the first step where water fills the seed.
Water plays an important role in seed germination. It provides necessary hydration to a plant for vital activities of protoplasm, dissolved oxygen for the growing embryo, softens the seed coats and increases the seed permeability.
Water imbibition begins the process of germination.
List the part of seeds and tick the option which doesn't match.
Think of the gas which is an important source of energy for the growth of seed.
During seed dormancy: The seed coat resistant to water and gases, restricts water-uptake and oxygen exchange. The seeds with immature embryo do not germinate. Seeds which contain plant growth regulators inhibit seed germination. Some seeds require more time for their germination.
The three parts of the seeds are seed coat, cotyledons and embryo.
For seed germination, it requires a moderate temperature of around 25-30°C.
