IGCSE Grade 6 Maths Estimating sums and differences of whole numbers up to 6 digits
|
If the digits in hundred place is 5 or up, round up.
Round the number to the nearest thousand
To estimate the difference between the largest 6-digit number (999,999) and the smallest 6-digit number (100,000) to the nearest thousand, we round each number to the nearest thousand and then find the difference.
Rounding 999,999 to the nearest thousand gives us 1,000,000. Rounding 100,000 to the nearest thousand gives us 100,000.
Subtracting these rounded numbers, 1,000,000 - 100,000 = 900,000.
Therefore, the estimated difference between the largest 6-digit number and the smallest 6-digit number to the nearest thousand is 900,000.
Round to the nearest hundred
round it to the nearest thousand
If the digit in the ten thousand place is 5 or above round up
To estimate the difference between the smallest 5-digit number (10,000) and 77,777 to the nearest hundred, we round each number to the nearest hundred and then find the difference.
Rounding 10,000 to the nearest hundred gives us 10,000. Rounding 77,777 to the nearest hundred gives us 77,800.
Subtracting these rounded numbers, 77,800 - 10,000 = 67,800.
Therefore, the estimated difference between the smallest 5-digit number and 77,777 to the nearest hundred is 67,800.

Look at the digit in the ones column
o estimate the sum of the greatest 6-digit number (999,999) and 899,012 to the nearest tens, we round each number to the nearest tens and then add them.
Rounding 999,999 to the nearest tens gives us 1,000,000. Rounding 899,012 to the nearest tens gives us 899,010.
Adding these rounded numbers, 1,000,000 + 899,010 = 1,899,010.
Therefore, the estimated sum of the greatest 6-digit number and 899,012 to the nearest tens is 1,899,010.
